Decision details

Weedon Street Pedestrian / Cycle Crossing

Decision status: Recommendations Approved

Purpose:

To inform of the proposal to provide a controlled crossing at the junction of Brightside Lane and Weedon Street for use of pedestrians and cyclists.

Decision:

Approve and implement the scheme as shown in Appendix A of the report, subject to any required re-confirmation of costs after detailed design (including any commuted sums).

Reasons for the decision:

·         The Council has a corporate objective to increase active travel as part of its overall transport strategy in order to improve travel choice and tackle congestion.

·         The scheme provides a safer crossing point from the Wincobank/Brightside/Fir Vale areas to the city centre via the 5 Weirs Walk, outbound towards Meadowhall, Parsons Cross, Chapeltown and the employment centres at junction 35 via the Blackburn Valley route (Blackburn Valley schemes in progress) Easterly towards AMID at Waverley via the Europa Link.

·         The crossing point will benefit both cyclists and pedestrians.

·         This scheme forms part of plans for a much wider ambition for cycling.

·         Contribution to improved air quality in the area.

Alternative options considered:

The only other option considered was a bridge at this junction. This was rejected in early feasibility due to the prohibitive costs.
