When not composted correctly, household food waste will not break down adequately and will instead release gases that contribute to climate change. As part of Sheffield City Council's declaration of a Climate Emergency, this should be taken into account. This is an opportunity for the council to demonstrate that it is a leading group in tackling environmental issues; only 27% of local authorities in the UK collect food waste separately and given Sheffield's generally forward-thinking stance on similar issues, it is deeply disappointing that this has not yet been tackled.
The advice on the Sheffield City Council website on reducing food waste is a start, but some waste will always be inevitable. The advice on home composting is also well-meaning but inaccessible to many residents, in particular those living in housing with no gardens or rented accommodation as well as Sheffield's large student population. The collection of a separate food waste caddy is necessary in order to tackle food waste in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
