A Bag to collect battery

We the undersigned petition the council to provide households with a bag for used batteries. If you look on the Sheffield Veolia twitter page, they tell you NOT to put batteries in with household waste (black bin) or in the blue or brown recycling bins. Why, because it can start a fire when it is collected by Veolia. But, and it is a BIG but, how many households take that advice and choice to keep themselves and others safe? When the bins are collected, that is when the hazard can happen to the crew or to the bin lorry, when the household rubbish or recycling is in the back of the bin lorry and the batteries are been thrown away with the rest of the household rubbish or recycling it can catch fire damaging the bin lorry or putting to crew at risk.

The other option is to take it down to the household recycling centre, but how many people can be bothered to do that. Not everyone can be bothered to do that can they.

The big point is we are using more batteries today than we were doing say 5 or 10 years a go, and if we don’t recycle them in the right way, where are cars and buses, for example, going to get replacement batteries from without damaging the environment.
