Make the CAZ scheme a None Charging scheme

We the undersigned petition the council to make the CAZ scheme a none chargeable scheme if it is serious about improving air quality in the city centre

Sheffield City Council has decided to impose a so called "Clean Air Zone" on all of the residents of Sheffield from February 2023.
The following daily charges will apply for polluting vehicles:
o Buses £50
o Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) £50
o Coaches £50
o Vans £10
o LGVs £10
o Taxis £10

This is a class C chargeable zone

The Government website states: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/air-quality-clean-air-zone-framework-for-england/clean-air-zone-framework

The introduction of the zone will need extensive engagement and consultation with neighbouring authorities, local communities and businesses to: explain the aims, including the potential health and economic benefits; understand any concerns; and assess the need for any mitigating actions.

Can you remember being asked by Sheffield City Council if you wanted this?

We were not! This is not democracy.

“This petition is not against the introduction of Clean Air Zones to improve air quality and to reduce air pollution, it is against Sheffield City Council deciding to make it a chargeable CAZ, therefore putting more taxes, fines, unfair charges on people.
If Sheffield City Council are dedicated to improving the Air in Sheffield, then why not implement a “Non-charging CAZ”. This type of CAZ does not impose fees on vehicles passing through it. Instead, it relies on other measures to improve air quality. Examples of such measures – as suggested by the Government’s Clean Air Zone Framework – are improved public transport links, refined road layouts, and more cycle lanes It should be noted that charging CAZs can also contain non-charging elements.

Please rethink how paying the above daily charges would affect you, your family, your friends, your business, your life.
