Sheffield Council to give Households Compost Bags to Collect and Recycle Food Waste Using the Black Bin.

We the undersigned petition the council to Do you remember in November 2023, Sheffield Council decided to delay the food Waste Service collection until 2038? Recently, in the Sheffield Star, I found out that Sheffield Council's bin contractors, Veolia, only manage to recycle just over 30% of the household waste they collect, that is not a good sign if you are looking at how polluted Sheffield is becoming. When you look at other UK Councils, the majority of them took the chance/opportunity to accept government funding to start a roadside food waste service. Sheffield Council however choose to delay this option until 2038 when Veolia’s bin contract comes to an end, not taking the option of applying for funding but renewing a 36 year bin contract. Sheffield Council took the option back in 2017 to renew, a mistake only Sheffield Council can take responsibility for making . Have Sheffield households seen any improvement to the roadside bin service, the answer is no?

I also read in that same headline that households could be forced to put all the general waste that gets placed in the black bin into the blue bin just so that Sheffield Council can improve the recycling rates. I sadly see one problem, and that is more fly tipping cases coming Sheffield Councils way. This is why I say to Sheffield Council to give household compost bags to collect the food waste in, then, and only then, place it in the black bin and maybe you would know where the food waste actually is. Maybe then the council may just get a high recycling percentage, above 30%. Not forgetting the council may just save more of tax payers money and put it to better use. Not forgetting you may just be saving a whole lot more plastic bags. Something that is also bad for the environment.
